Derma-Kare Alternating Pressure Overlay System is a Powered air mattress overlay
INTENDED USES: To provide effective A/P therapy with low interface pressures.
CLAIMED FEATURES: Therapeutic support surface consists of superior quality, urethane coated nylon air cushions (16 cell overlay or 16/20 cell mattress).
OPTIONAL SIDE BOLSTERS;constant air pressure side bolsters / foam bolsters help contain the patient on the mattress. Air bolsters can be deflated for easy patient access into and out of the mattress and also for easy patient procedures. Low friction, low shear force producing and highly vapor permeable urethane coated breathable nylon or 4-way stretch top sheet. 2” convoluted safety foam base or 2” optional air pad base (8”; 10” mattress) to provide additional support to the patient in the event of power failure. The air cells are connected to the manifold using quick connectors (hose manifold with straight connectors on Foam Aire products) and fastened to the base. The top sheet is zippered to the base. Tri-Lumen tubing assembly with single, rugged quick disconnect connector for rapid attach and CPR deflate function. Holds air for days during power failure. Complete support surface is made of superior quality materials and is modular in construction. All of the components such as manifold, tubing assembly, air cushions, top sheet, and foam base are interchangeable and can be easily cleaned or detached for laundry. Lightweight support surface can be rolled up easily and has two handles or two shoulder straps, which can be used to carry by hand or over the shoulder.
OPTION: Pad overlays or cell overlays are 3” or 5” or 7” high and mattress replacements are 8” or 10” high.
Pressure reducing support surfaces are a type of medical equipment used for the care of pressure sores, also known as pressure ulcers or injuries. Pressure ulcers are lesions caused by constant pressure on areas in contact with the mattress, resulting in damage of skin and deep tissues.
Some pressure reducing mattresses overlays are powered by electricity (known as powered air mattress overlay) and others are not. They should be placed on top of a standard hospital or home mattress and not directly on a hospital bed frame. Powered pressure reducing mattresses have a surface designed to reduce friction and shear through technologies know as alternating pressure, low air loss, or powered flotation without low air loss. They have a pump or blower which provides either sequential inflation and deflation of the air cells or a low interface pressure throughout the overlay. They are indicated for persons with deeper pressure ulcers (stage II, III or IV) or after surgery, for persons who received a flap or skin graft to cover a wound.
Local Coverage Determination for Pressure Reducing Support Surfaces - Group 2 (L33642)
Medicare Part B (Medical Insurance) covers rental of powered air mattress overlays that are considered medically necessary for treatment of a superficial (stage II) or deep (stages III or IV) pressure injuries with skin loss, or following a flap or skin graft surgery. Rental reimbursement is capped at 13 months for pressure ulcers, and at 60 days for flaps or skin grafts. Medicare has guidelines that establish what is considered medically necessary and how often an item can be used.
Powered air mattress overlay can be rented through Medicare from medical equipment stores. You can also purchase this product "out-of-pocket" (without insurance), from medical equipment stores.
